Poker

So, one of my more recent passions is playing on-line poker. I know what most churches say about gambling, but I contend that poker is not gambling, it's a game of skill (if it were gambling and based mainly on luck, explain why Phill Helmuth has 11 WSOP bracelets). Anyway, in the last year, after making deposits and not getting a lot to show for it, I've seemed to break through recently, won a few tournaments, and am close to not being labeled as a fish anymore by Sharkscope. Woo-hoo!

What is Sharkscope you may ask, well it's a website (http://www.sharkscope.com/) that keeps track of poker players on-line, with how they've done over time. The theory is that if you pay them a bit of cash, you'll get to look up who you're in a tournament with so you know who is a good player and who isn't and adjust your play accordingly. They give everyone 5 free searches per day, and it can be very intersting to see how different players have fared over time (feel free to check out my name - SirNitty from Pokerstars to see what I'm talking about). What impresses me the most is what people come up with to make money. Who would think of building a database of different on-line poker players?

On Pokerstars, where I play, you get to put an image up that represents you. I have an image of the Rally Monkey, because, I can always use a nice rally at the poker table. Some people choose to not show an image, some show their favorite icon from pop culture, and some show their significant others. All good so far. However, then there are those that show pictures of their babies. This seems to be "too much of a good thing". I know that you are proud of your kids, but do you really want someone cursing out the image of your kid when they are delivered a bad beat at your hands? I just don't get why you'd do that?

I'm sure that I'll be blogging more on Poker in the weeks to come.

Evangeline makes SSA's top 1000 baby names of 2006

My wife and I gave birth to our first child on February 2007. We wanted her to have a traditional, but uncommon name. I was known as Dave C. growing up, due to the large number of "Davids" in class and didn't want my daughter to have the same experience.

We picked the name Evangeline. It's the title of an Epic poem by Longfellow and much more recently a song by Matthew Sweet. It hadn't been in the Social Security Administration's top 1000 baby names since 1966. Plus, she'll have a ton of options of what she'll be able to go by, including Eve, Eva, Lina, Van, Vanna, Angel, Evelyn, etc. I like the full version, but I'm sure it will be shortened at some point in her life.

I just looked at the top baby names for 2006, and I was shocked. After a 40 year absence, Evangeline was on the list again. Actually, it wasn't just on the list, it came in at number597, it's highest showing since 1941. Number 597 isn't exactly going to have half the room turn their heads when someone says "Evangeline", but the name is certainly getting more popular.
